Thoughts On Self-Value
I write on this topic often, but it keeps coming up, so I keep writing.
A prospect contacted me recently and wanted to set up a free consultation. My expertise is not free. More than two decades of sweat, time, energy and money leaves me with this amazing skillset. And it's worth every penny of my hourly rate... and MUCH MORE! But only if I know this is true and remain committed to this clarity.
This comes up often for female entrepreneurs. How often have you been approached for a barter? How often do you feel at least temporarily obliged to say, "Yes," without stopping to assess how this response relates to your self-value?
In my experience, the more I say, "No," the more free I am to pursue those opportunities that truly honor and support my knowing that what I have to offer the world does indeed have value.
Until our culturally agreed-on method of fair exchange goes from cash to bartership, I remain committed to exchanging my time and expertise for it's fair and inherent value in the form of cash.
It is my sincere wish for you that you see the importance of doing the same.

Don't Let This Happen To You
It seems everywhere I look I see spelling, punctuation and grammatical bloopers. Because it's my business, I am especially attuned, but you must see examples of this as well. Whether it's print advertising, billboards, Web sites or other marketing venues, I always wonder how the boo-boos made it through what should be an arduous process of checking and double-checking for errors.
We all make mistakes, but do your best to prevent embarrassing oversights by having an effective, preventive system in place. At the minimum, perform a spell check using your computer software AND have one other person review the copy before releasing your materials to the world.
Here are some examples that make my point:
- A huge, professionally-painted sign on the side of an old warehouse: "House's Wanted."
- A real estate ad describing the benefits of a remote mountain cabin: "Escape the hussel and bussel of the city."
- An advertisement for typing/editing services (I did not make up this! How could I?): "I am a very good typist, and have some time on my hands. If you need papers typed or edited for content or grammaracle errors, Give me a call!"

It *IS* All About You!
Recently I wrote about "it" *not* being about you.
Having said that, I'd like to give voice to another -- seemingly conflicting -- truth (a dear soulmate taught me that more than one thing can be true at a time):
Let me explain.
Your life should be everything YOU want it to be. Making decisions and choices with your highest interest as the primary consideration isn't always easy, though. I understand. However, once you get into the habit, it is easier and comes naturally.
It's important to honor ourselves in this way because it sets clear boundaries and eliminates the possibility that you'd do something for which you'd be resentful later. Life's just too short to do--or continue doing--things that cost us in precious life energy.

Ritual and Sacred Bonding
I attended my cousin's wedding shower yesterday.
As much as I can, I stay away from wedding and baby showers. I prefer inclusive co-ed events that don't separate men and women. It perpetuates the notion that women should be here doing this-or-that and men should be there doing something-or-other.
On one level I understand and on so many more levels I don't. Separation can do nothing but give permission, excuses or reasons for even more separation.
Instead I'd rather place my energies on celebrating the differences and finding more opportunities for the two to connect in ways that honor each.
It was a beautiful day, though. After a gracious, heartfelt thank you my cousin confided in me that she never felt like a valued part of the family and today made a difference. I never knew. That's why it's important to step away from our first preference (for me it would have been to not attend) to honor those we love. We may never know what our actions mean to them and how deeply they can be felt.

Entrepreneurs Ask... What Can I Expect To Pay For Expert Copywriting?
The Answer: It depends. There's no specific answer because there are too many variables.
Craigslist.com has copywriter postings for $10/hour. Top copywriters command upwards of $750/hour. So, you can expect to pay between $10 and $750 per hour. Averaged, that is $370 per hour.
I know. It's not much of an answer.
Hiring a copywriter sounds like an easy task. Then you begin researching the possibilities and quickly enter the abyss of frustration and overwhelm. There are no easy "apples-to-apples, oranges-to-oranges" comparisons because pricing depends on:
- Years of experience
- Target market
- Knowledge/expertise in a specific industry
- A proven track record of results
- Investment in ongoing training and learning about industry trends from national experts
- What the current market will pay
Generally, there are 4 ways copywriters charge for services:
- Per word (copy suitable for newsletters, Web sites, brochures, business cards and blogs)
- Per page (Web site copywriting)
- Per project (based on a review of your materials and a formal written proposal)
- Per package (a specific number of copywriting hours per month, pre-paid in full)
- Ask for referrals from fellow colleagues/entrepreneurs you trust.
- Review Web sites for all referrals to determine if the copywriter is a good fit for you based on experience, knowledge of your industry, specific expertise and a personal vibe.
- Read the policies/procedures and pricing pages, if posted, to determine how projects are priced.
- Submit a request for proposal via email, submit a "Request for Proposal" form or schedule an appointment to discuss the project parameters. Your final decision is often based on how you connect with the copywriter.
- Review of client materials
- First draft
- Two rounds of client revisions (additional revisions charged hourly rate)
With a quick internet search, you can find services offering copywriting for $10/page. That sounds good at first... until you realize the work is actually performed in India (or Pakistan or China) by non-native English speakers.
You don't think that will cost you later in grief, time AND money?
Sure it will, but by the time you realize your lapse in judgment to get the best deal, it's too late. Your Agreement has been signed, you paid a deposit, your credit card number is on file to pay the balance due, and what you get back after waiting weeks or months cannot even be used, the quality is so poor. So, the search begins all over again and the saga continues.
In conclusion, what you can expect to pay for professional copywriting comes down to the investment you make to find a good fit financially, energetically and professionally.
Don't choose the cheapest bid simply because it's the lowest. Pros charge professional rates because they can and do deliver. That's the whole point in hiring them in the first place. You pay a rate that ensures professional results.

It's Not About You!
I noticed something.
So often, we put the actions, words, and aspects of others' lives in terms of our own experience.
Here's an example: I have a friend who's taking a 3-week motorcycle journey across the U.S. Before his departure, I made a mini-scrapbook to commemorate the journey. This is the content:
This journey is the only one of its kind.
This time,
this experience,
this exploration,
can never be recaptured
in the same way again... ever.
It can only be maximized by fully
enjoying - and being present in -
every moment.
Whatever those moments contain,
they exist solely for you... to breathe,
to laugh, to learn, to enjoy, to grow,
to change. They are opportunities
to see all of life from a new perspective.
Soon enough this will be a memory...
an experience to enhance the richness
of your life without the ability to recall
any but the most memorable aspects
and influences.
I wish you every colorful, enchanting, diverse,
stimulating, energizing, thought-provoking,

Back to my observation:
What I noticed is that it takes a special--and important--awareness to see the actions, words and aspects of others' lives as having nothing at all to do with us.
Using my friend's journey as an example, it has nothing to do with me. Instead of sharing what I wished for his experience, I could have made it about me; how I might miss him, what his experience would mean to my life and me, how his exploration would provide insight into our connection. No, no, and no. It is for him... exclusively. To make it about me indicates I am so focused on myself that I cannot step out and away from me to see the greater picture... that all of life is not about me!
We can become so over sensitized that we completely lose perspective. We walk around with a false sense that everything circulates in relation to us. When you think about it, making everything about us is a form of arrogance. We cannot afford to take things personally and we cannot make the lives of others about us.
So rarely does what people say, think or do have anything to do with us. It has everything to do with their individual and solitary path and how they perceive the world through their chosen filter.
When you see an opportunity, make the circumstance in front of you about the other person. Focus on them. Provide support. If inspired, lend a helping hand or word of support. And release yourself from the idea that it has anything to do with you. It probably doesn't!
Free yourself. The life you have is your own. Place the bulk of your energies there and you'll find plenty of work! Allow others their own experience... for that is their sacred journey.

Gender-based Marketing Copy: Why This Trend Is Growing Exponentially and Why It's Crucial To Speak Directly To Women
Statistics show women make 85% of consumer buying decisions. Is it any wonder then that we need to write online and Web site content specifically to them? Using a new approach that literally speaks their language?
Instead of writing tired copy based on the old patriarchal paradigm, it's time to think differently about how we approach women to offer our products and services.
There's a completely new shift happening and with it comes many opportunities to market in ways never before imagined or attempted... which will actually use less language to sell and more language that connects. When women feel they're heard and understood, they will purchase from you. When they see a fresh coat of paint on an old marketing approach, they won't. All the rules have changed. Let's dig in.
Why is this trend growing so rapidly?
Simply put: Because it's time.
There is an energetic/spiritual reconciliation occurring on the planet and women (as well as those characteristics culturally related to being female) will become much more prominent... in business, in politics, in religion, in every leadership position. It is a result of things being so out of balance for so long. What is out of balance must right itself at some point in time. That time is now.
So, how does this relate to the language of online marketing? Because if what I'm saying is true (you must feel it for yourself and check it against what you see happening around you) there's a ton of opportunity about to explode... for all of us! Why not be ahead of the trend to make sure your business is in complete compliance and poised to maximize every possible angle?
(As a generality) women are innately nurturing nesters. There's no amount of denying this that changes it. There are inherent tendencies to women that no matter how much time passes or cultural changes occur, are prominent, prevalent and won't go away simply because they don't sound politically correct. Sure there are exceptions and nurturing nesters may never birth children, create comfortable homes or be gracious hosts, but nevertheless there are expressions of being uniquely female with variations of the same theme.
That's why it's important to write to these themes. To be effective, we must address the issues, cares, concerns, fears and frustrations of women.
Some people think targeted copy doesn't make any difference. You decide. Let me give you an example: To which gender is each of these ads meant to target?
1. "With all the demands at work, there's no time to waste. Our hard-hitting tactics guarantee results."
2. "With all the demands on your time -- at work and home, with family and friends -- it's vital to make wise decisions that ensure you have as much time as possible for everything and everyone you love."
As a female consumer, of course you are more motivated by the second ad. No doubt. It speaks to someone who understands you (you have limited time), supports you (in making wise decisions), and offers you a solution to resolve a frequent frustration (having time for everything and everyone in your life).
So, what works with women? Language that:
· elicits feelings of connection to others
· ties into/addresses personal aspects of life (home, balancing personal/business lives, integrating children, support networks, virtual and actual communities, etc.)
· ties into compassion, nurturing, connectivity
· is inclusive of more than just her... it speaks to all the women she knows
This trend is quickly gaining momentum. Not only do women make 85% of all buying decisions, they make up 40% as household heads, and run 40% of companies in the United States. Women went from being A segment of the market to being THE market!

Thoughts On Sovereignty, Service and Other Stuff

I've been thinking about how we hold sacred space for others, how we help others maintain their dignity and the role each of us plays in offering the gift of sovereignty.
There are no definitive conclusions yet... just more considerations as the days pass. I think each of these explorations deserves its own mindful assessment, but for the purposes of this note, they are lumped together because there's a common thread: We are here to be of service to each other... in some form, in some fashion, in some way. We do it based on our unique talents, our preferences and a myriad of other components, but nevertheless, a sense of service is prominent.
Do you realize only you can make your valuable and irreplaceable contribution? That if your light doesn't shine, the world and its inhabitants feel the impact? That you are precious and valuable even when you feel or think your life makes no difference?
My personal "business" card says, "Charlon Bobo, Muse, Seer of Potential, Divine Guide." I tell you this because it is becoming so much more clear to me that we need to support each other. I exist to reflect your glory. I serve as a reminder and model that we need to be more accessible and transparent. We must step up to provide an element of dignity where its lacking. We must learn what it is to live and breathe spiritual sovereignty. We must give voice and life to all forms of justice. We must be bold and fearless when living our lives. For they are of the few things that matter as we create a new collective based in love.
I can only be the best Charlon I can be. You can only be the best you you can be, but it's incumbent upon each of of us to step into our roles and do what we agreed to do. I cannot play your role and you cannot play mine. It takes a global village to accomplish greatness. Let's do it!

Intuitive Business Decision-Making Made Easy
With intuition we engage the
instinctive and unconscious knowing
without deduction or reasoning
Intuition is receiving input and ideas without knowing exactly how and where you got them. You simply know they are not a result of your pool of accumulated life knowledge.
Like creativity, intuitive inspiration often happens when we are in heightened states of emotion, anticipation or peaceful bliss. Intuitive abilities can be honed and refined to richly enhance our lives. And they can easily be adapted for business use!
Most of us are familiar with making intuitive decisions in our daily lives, but not so familiar or comfortable using this approach for business. However, things are a-changin' and trends in business now include what were once unheard-of methods for managing very successful and lucrative empires.
Intuitive decision making is much more expansive than using common sense because it involves additional sensors to perceive and become aware of information from the outside. Sometimes it is referred to as gut feeling, sixth sense, inner sense, instinct, inner voice, spiritual guide, etc. It is related to developing a higher consciousness in order to train these sensors and to make the process of receiving information intuitively a more conscious one.
The question isn't whether rational reasoning or intuitive decision-making is better. Both are valuable tools in the toolkits of life. The question is rather how both approaches can be best combined for optimal results.

4. know our request will be answered.
5. pay attention to what shows up in front of us.
6. express gratitude by thanking Angels, Source, God, The Universe, Mother Earth (whatever you call your Higher Power).
7. take immediate action.
Your response will most likely come as a "feeling." At first, this may be so subtle, it's hard to read. Don't sweat it. Just relax and pay attention. It gets easier the more you exercise this muscle and acknowledge the process with gratitude EVERY TIME you get a response... which will be after every request!
With the enormous growth and increasing awareness of conscious -- or spiritual -- entrepreneurship, this approach will become second-nature. Just like you cannot remove the eggs from a baked cake, you cannot separate out your spiritual life from your business life... nor would you want to. There's no reason for the separateness. It only serves to feed the old paradigm which is quickly crumbling into a mass of rubble.

One of the many benefits of home-based entrepreneurship is the ability to dress as if it's casual Friday every day of the week. As business owners, we thrive on that kind of freedom.
It is easy, though, to slip into a zone of comfort. To the extreme, this is known as "frumpy and dumpy." You might think it doesn't matter what you wear to the office. IT DOES MATTER and may even effect how well you function.
There's no doubt what we wear impacts how we feel. And how we feel translates to everything else.
Purposeful intent has a huge impact on how prepared we are to meet the demands of each day. The term "getting ready" says it all. It is the process by which we mentally prep. Our actions say to the universe, "I'm ready. Bring it on!"
What is your morning routine before sitting down at your computer to start the day? Do you intentionally prepare for the day or roll out of bed, stagger to your home office and start reviewing emails and returning telephone calls? Is it Noon - or even 5 PM - before you realize you didn't actually "start" your day?
When you do dress, do you:
- put on comfortable, yet clean clothes in good condition (no holes or stains)?
- mix/match colors that particularly inspire you?
- choose clothing that fits properly... neither too big or too small?
- choose consciously based on what feels right for that day?
- make selections from a range of quality clothing, so no matter what you choose, you feel great?
- Do you bath or shower every day?
- Do you brush your teeth?
- Do you put on make-up and do your hair?
- Do you spritz a little perfume on your wrists?
- Do you do whatever else helps you transition from private time to work time?
I don't necessarily advocate clicking around your office in pumps unless it makes you feel like a mighty powerhouse of productivity. If it does, definitely put them on and click to your heart's content!
Or wear your bunny slippers.
Perfume? No perfume? Make-up? No make-up?
Your specific choices don't matter. (However, I do encourage you to brush your teeth!)
What does matter is how you feel when you make those choices. If you feel less than the very best version of yourself, this vibe translates to every telephone call, meeting, plan, project and email. It's a subtle influence, but it definitely makes an impact in the life of your business and the maximum productivity of every day.
If you still think it doesn't matter, try a new dressing and hygiene regimen for just one week. You'll feel different and act different as a result. Who knows? Feeling and acting different may even translate to increased income! You'll have to let me know.

DIY (Do It Yourself) or Delegate? THAT Is The Question
It's hard to be objective when you're so close to your business. To save money, as entrepreneurs we often consider doing many things ourselves. There are smart reasons, though, to give this approach careful consideration before proceeding.
Economics are very real, but so are your efforts. To waste them wastes time that can be better spent focusing on doing what you do best to grow your business.
How do you determine whether the task in front of you is something you should do yourself or delegate to a pro?
Remember: There are no right or wrong choices when it comes to either option. There are simply decisions that must be made. With mindful consideration you'll know exactly which option is best in each situation.
1. Ask yourself these simple Do-It-Yourself questions:
- Do I possess innate talent for this task? When we perform based on our natural gifts, the results are highly productive and soul-fulfilling. It doesn't cost us much in time or effort to perform these tasks.
- Have I done it before? If you already perform the task and enjoy it, the best choice may be to DIY. If it's something that truly interests you, and you've never done it before, it may be a worthwhile task to perform to build your skill set.
- Do I have experience performing this task at/near expert level? Do you have a burning desire to learn accounting or set up a shopping cart? If you do, that's probably your business. If you don't, it may take more time becoming proficient enough to make it worth your time. Look at the long-term investment of the learning curve. If you invest the time now, will you want to continue this task when your business is in full bloom?
- Do I enjoy this task? When we love what we do, things just flow. They don't feel like work. Time passes quickly and we are done before we know it. With few exceptions, that's how the DIY approach should feel. If you dread the task in front of you, you gain nothing by doing it yourself. Delegate NOW!
- Can I complete this task without other projects falling behind? You might think you have more time than money, but what is your time worth? If you have one project that can be completed and turned into cash and it's something only you can do, that must be your priority! Doing everything yourself is impossible. If your to-do list is wildly out-of-control already, how can you feel good about doing yet another thing that can be delegated? There's enough to do.
- Can I complete this task in a reasonable amount of time? If it takes an expert two hours for a logo design and you pay her $295, and it takes you 10 hours because you have to learn a new program and create the design, have you saved anything? When you learn the program is your innate talent design composition? That 10 hours might be much better invested in development of an e-book, formulating a new product or ANYTHING that can generate many more times the cost of the logo.
- How will I feel about the time and energy invested if I do this myself? The feeling of wasting time or energy weighs heavy. How often have you completed something only to wish you could start all over and delegate it because the project became a monster? What about the results? Did they exceed your expectations? Maybe, maybe not. If you don't have full confidence in doing it yourself, delegate. The pro you hire must deliver goods that at least meet your expectations. If not, they have to do it again. This requires no further investment of time or money on your part because the liability is 100% with the expert you hired.
- What is my budget for this project? Be specific and realistic. How much are you investing and what is the ROI (Return On Investment)?
- What do I get in addition to what I'm paying for? When you hire a pro, you're getting so much more than what you hired them for. You are buying time. As an example: 2 hours to learn more about search engine optimization, R&D on a new product, launch a new Blog, time to schedule a much-needed coaching session, hire a marketing business consultant, develop a plan for 2009, etc. By delegating, you give yourself a structured time slot that would have been spent performing the task, but instead you can use for something else that must be done... maybe something only you can do.
- If I delegate this, how will I use the time instead? Map it out and be specific. Set a goal for yourself. That way it feels like two things are being accomplished at the same time, which they are!
- Does this use of time make more sense than doing this myself? If you quietly ask yourself this question and listen, the answer will surface. It's your internal guidance system helping you make wise decisions based on much more than the logical considerations in front of you.
Another Option
Instead of the common polar approach which is: "This or that; black or white, full or empty," think of ways you can maximize the services of a pro with each of you doing a portion. This gives you the benefits of both experiences; DIY and delegating.
As an example, one of my clients writes all her copy. She emails it to me for a complete edit. This saves her considerable money because she's completed the bulk of the work. On the average, this saves clients 3/5 of the cost of a full copywriting job because it doesn't involve the extensive background research required for me to deliver rich content. She saves money, but benefits from a second set of expert eyes on her marketing materials.
Now, that's a win-win situation!

My Biggest Business Challenge... uh, Circumstance - Part 2 of 2
If you missed the August 20, 2007 issue of The Indie Experience, I was asked about my biggest business challenge.
Last week's article (Part 1) addressed the value of reframing ideas (or questions, in this case) and the freedom of not labeling circumstance. This week's article (Part 2) contains my answer.
Now that you know how I approach this question of my biggest "challenge," I am excited to candidly share with you my biggest business life circumstance.
I warn you, however. It requires a mental adjustment to the traditional approach to business.
Without further delay, here we go!
The biggest business life circumstance I encounter is:
overwhelmed by the thought
that delivering the best for my clients
depends on my knowledge alone
I'm exceptional at what I do and have worked diligently to acquire my current skill set. But, when I step out and away from my business, in the grand scheme of life, I must acknowledge that the knowledge I've accumulated is miniscule compared to the vast knowledge imprinted -- and accessible -- in the ether.
Every thought, every invention, every word ever spoken, the inspirations for every great painting, the angst of every artist, every solution, every creative notion, every everything lingers "out there."
And if it lingers, these etheric inspirations are accessible to every one of us... if only we ask. (This "collective of creativity" is linked to our intuition and spirit-help. Keep this in mind as you read further.)
The funny thing is no one ever told us we could ask! And it didn't occur instinctively to ask for help or inspiration from these impressions.
The Secret to Obliterating My Biggest Life Circumstance
Every day we hear more and more about conscious entrepreneurship. I have developed and refined spiritual business practices for more than a decade, but the message is now hitting the mainstream. The world of commerce has changed. Our lives are no longer separated into neat compartments of home and work. Instead they are a complex mix of the many facets of our one, integrated life. It is thrilling to see entrepreneurs embrace and incorporate all elements of this physical plane to thrive in business (physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual). This alone seems to be moving us along at a rapid pace of growth.
However, many entrepreneurs still focus on adding to their tangible skill set (e.g. project management, internet marketing skills, effective sales techniques, etc.)... all without implementing another, equally vital and useful tool.
Certainly I depend on my expertise and years of experience, but there's another more effective component to my success. It's a secret, really, and although I don't speak of it often, it's my magical -- and until now, private -- key to doing so well in business.
Clients refer to me as "The Intuitive Copywriter." They're absolutely right.
My secret is this:

In my experience, my skills are sufficient to deliver results that exceed client expectations. However, paired with this magical component, I am able to access insights not based on accumulated knowledge, but instead sourced from the divine and the etheric impressions mentioned earlier.
How Does It Work?
Throughout my day I am in ongoing communication with my Source (feel free to replace this word with the name of your spiritual source; God, Buddha, Mother Nature, The Goddess, Ultimate Creativity, etc. The name doesn't matter. That you access this resource IS what matters.). I simply remain in a state of openness and active listening.
THAT'S IT! If it sounds simple, it is. If it sounds too simple to work, it isn't.
It allows me the flexibility to take inspired, specific action instead of random action based on the latest trends. After all, my guidance comes directly from The Source. Think about it: Isn't it smarter to be directly plugged into The Source and get the insider scoop on the best next move for your unique business via a quiet inspiration vs. trying to incorporate the latest trend(s) based on technical data and projections? Talk about work!
How, Indeed!
Another facet of engaging Source is: I have completely removed myself from figuring out the "how" of things:
- How will I create the "hook" for my client's new product?
- How will that situation resolve itself?
- How can I bridge this misunderstanding?
- How will I pay for the new color printer?
- How can I increase productivity with limited monetary and personnel resources?
When I first notice something that feels like a "how" detail, I acknowledge it and invite my spiritual guides to work it out and completely delegate the "how" to them.
When purposely separated from the "how," answers, creative input, resolve, options and ideas flow to you effortlessly. It's all about letting go... about relinquishing control of your need to come up with all the answers based on what (little) you know. Access creativity and inspiration so
- the "work" of working becomes creating
- you become part of a collaboration bigger than you and your business
A Passive Approach? | What Do I Do Now?
If you think this is a passive approach to business success, it can seem that way initially. If you're not busy figuring out the "how," what ARE you supposed to be doing?
With a mental switch of now relying on Spirit as part of your team, your job becomes taking only inspired action.
To take inspired action means you have to know what to do. To know what to do means you have to somehow clearly "hear" or understand what it is you're inspired to do.
One must listen very carefully to the sound of Spirit. It sounds easy (no pun intended), but it requires practice... especially at first. Paying attention to subtlety is an art!
Your experience may be audible, felt-audible (I feel/hear divine inspiration in my right ear), a feeling, or a physical manifestation (the stomach area is very common). It may even be a slight shift in your emotions that becomes your personal way of knowing.
Subtle nuance. Pay attention!
There are as many paths as there are people, and this moment-by-moment, inspired and effective approach to business -- and your personal life -- deserves a trial run. If it doesn't work, you can always go back to the overwhelm and frustration of managing everything yourself and depending on your knowledge alone to carry you.
It may sound so simplistic and yet couldn't we all use less complicated systems when the results prove that simplicity works?
Go ahead, unburden yourself. Relinquish the need to think you have to know it all, ask for help and delegate the "hows" to those spiritual entities much better equipped to deliver ultimate creative solutions. Watch what happens.
If you want to experience more confidence, more peace and a much wider well from which to draw, add the spiritual element to your business activities. It doesn't matter what product or service you offer. Spirit is available to deliver better results than you can ever imagine.

My Biggest Challenge - Part 1 of 2
If you missed the August 20, 2007 issue of The Indie Experience, I was asked about my biggest business challenge.
As someone who approaches life with a unique perspective, I had to mentally reframe the question before I could respond.
This article (Part 1) addresses the value of reframing ideas (or questions, in this case) and the freedom of not labeling circumstance. Next week's article (Part 2) contains my answer to the question: "What Is Your Biggest Challenge?"
The Art of Reframing
My need to reframe the question posed in the interview has a foundation in acknowledging that I don't think the way most people do.
Without reframing the question, I would have to honestly answer, "I don't have challenges." However, this response places me in a position in which you cannot relate to me. I build as many bridges as possible for clear communication, and if you cannot relate to me -- for any reason -- I have not done my job. You stop listening.
So, instead of the answer, "I don't have challenges," I reframed the question based on how my mind works and my understanding of the impact of words (Part 1)... and then set out to answer the question (Part 2).
Reframing a question, notion, or situation is a preparation. It sets the foundation for maximum understanding or outcome. It allows us to take a few steps backward, look at the situation from another perspective, breathe deeply, relax and then proceed.
The reframed question allows me to illuminate yet another valuable life skill for your empowerment.
Dispelling the Need to Label Circumstance
I live the entire range of experiences of being on this physical plane... just like you. The difference is my mental approach, which is: "No circumstance is a challenge (or problem)."
I know how damaging it is to place labels on circumstance. How often have you heard someone else (or yourself) say, "That was so traumatic."
Engage me for just a moment. In recounting the story, what if, instead, you said, "Although I was scared at first, that experience taught me how much strength I really have when I need it! I was very proud of how I handled the situation."
Same scenario. Different mindset AND a diversely different impact on everyone involved... including you! One is based in fear and leaves the situation open-ended with IT in power. The second scenario is clearly concluded with YOU in power.
Sit with these examples for just a moment. How does each feel? Yeah, I thought so.
I understand the power of words.
I also understand the impact of thinking something like, "I'm having a terrible day. Nothing is going right," which can number in the thousands throughout the course of one day. (What can possibly be different if, with your thoughts, you've already committed to having a "terrible" day? You actually anchored that experience to you!)
Furthermore, I know the devastating impact of being in the habit of actually giving voice to these thoughts. (Don't do it! It serves no purpose other than feeding the monster and leaving you disempowered.)
Attaching your current experience to words like problem, catastrophe, bad, hardship, fiasco, mistake, emergency, disaster, tragedy, etc. is death to your well-being.
In my world there's no such thing... not because I am immune to the impact of everyday experience, but because I simply don't attach labels to circumstance.
It's a conscious choice at first and requires practice, but I promise, it soon becomes habit.
As you'll experience for yourself, eliminating the need to label experiences richly enhances your life because it frees you to consider other, more empowering, alternatives in the moment of now.
You, too, have a choice; you get to decide if the circumstances in front of you are "problems" or not.
Now that you know how I approach this question of my biggest "challenge," stay tuned to Part 2 in which I actually share with you my biggest business life circumstance. A hint: It will surprise and inspire you. It's a time-tested and proven technique to blow out all limitation. It's quick, it's easy and it's accessible to EVERYONE, but it requires a mental adjustment to the traditional approach to business!

Few Words In Small Spaces Must Still Communicate Effectively
There is no doubt small spaces require special attention. Space is a precious commodity; especially on instruction or ingredient labels. Based on experience, each word must pull its own weight.
A client recently contacted me about copy for a very small label. Directions for a similar product said, "Swirl, tap, buff."
As a consumer myself, with these directions, I wouldn't know how to use the product most effectively. Swirl what? Using what? Tap where? How hard? Buff where? To what extent?
Ugh. Another frustrating experience with the product thrown into the back of a drawer, never to see the light of day.
Keep in mind these 3 guidelines as you write any copy, but especially copy for tight spaces:
Guideline 1: Don't assume your customer will instinctively know how to use your product.
Guideline 2: Don't frustrate your customer by forcing her to try to figure out how to use your product.
Guideline 3: It's your job to instruct your consumer. Do it effectively.
My client required as few words as possible to fit the limited space, but as importantly, the words had to effectively communicate how to use the product. After all, what's the point if the words don't truly instruct and empower?
Below are some actual label instructions found on consumer products. They are not only attempts to write effectively in a small space, but to relieve the supplier of liability. Avoid this approach! It's lame and totally transparent to the consumer. Other examples exhibit simple carelessness, language/translation issues, and lack of attention to dual meanings.
These examples may cause you to laugh, but if it's your business name on the product, you have much to lose. If consumers perceive you as inept, will they purchase from you more than once? Probably not. This translates to a disastrous impact on your reputation and your business.
Someone, somewhere, approved this copy! Don't let this happen to you!
What can you learn from these examples? Have several people review your small-space copy to ensure it conveys what you intend. Otherwise, you risk losing your precious reputation, as well as sales.

Sales and Marketing Expert? Me?
For spirit-based or conscious entrepreneurs, it can be a challenge to think of ourselves -- at least at first -- as salespeople or marketers. It's very common to want to be of service, first. Although that is a component, the bottom line is we're in business to make money.
My mentor, Lorrie Morgan-Ferrero, says, "For better or for worse, we are all in sales. So face your fears, gulp hard and get out there and market!"
Bold? Yes! True? Yes!
So how do we make this leap to becoming marketing and sales experts?
Step 1 Acknowledge and affirm your primary purpose for being in business; to make money. This one simple exercise will move you into a new space.
Step 2 Begin accumulating knowledge of sales and marketing. One of my favorite books on the subject is Scientific Advertising by Claude Hopkins.
Step 3 Apply this new information to your business in ways that make the most sense for you. The methods and approaches of others will never work if you don't modify them -- at least a little -- to fit your life.
The process reminds of a puzzle. You are trying to find the combination of pieces that, when applied, complete the sales and marketing income- generating picture for your inspired business.
